Why is the divorce rate increasing among older spouses?

On Behalf of | May 11, 2023 | Divorce

One surprising statistic about marriages these days is that more spouses are choosing to stay together. The divorce rate in Arkansas and throughout the country is on the decline. However, the divorce rate is skyrocketing for one demographic. More older adults are getting divorced than ever before. Here are two primary reasons why is gray divorce on the rise.

Increased life expectancies

In the last few decades, medical care in the United States has improved significantly. Also, thanks to greater public awareness, people are just more health-conscious these days. On average, a 55 year-old adult can expect to live another 30 years, and maybe even more. But it also seems that many older adults are not willing to live their remaining years tied down in unhappy marriages.

Stigmas are changing

Social stigmas surrounding divorce have changed significantly in the last 20 years. In decades past, divorce was frowned upon, and many couples chose to remain married even if they had overwhelming differences simply to avoid the societal stigmas that came with divorce. Today, many of the stigmas have faded, and the general attitude about divorce has become more relaxed. Since spouses are no longer expected to stay together indefinitely, many are choosing to put an end to marriages that are unhappy.

Help with divorce

A divorce can be challenging at any stage in life. Those in Arkansas who have questions or need help with divorce can benefit by consulting with a knowledgeable legal professional. An experienced family law attorney can provide clarity and invaluable legal guidance throughout this often-challenging process.
