Making the parental transition easier for children

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2022 | Child Custody

A marital breakup is a difficult experience for most families and often creates significant amounts of stress for both parents and children. Parents in Arkansas who decide to divorce should strive to come to a child custody arrangement that best suits the needs of their children. Studies have shown that children benefit the most from close relationships with both parents, so family courts typically prefer a joint custody arrangement. This type of arrangement will have the children transitioning back and forth between parents. Here are a few ways to make this parental transition easier on the kids.

Be consistent

When parents are consistent with their discipline and rules, the children will feel more safe and secure as they adjust to stressful situations. Be mindful of overcompensating. For example, if one parent is strict, the other parent may be tempted to be more lenient. While one parent can’t control what goes on in the other household, the parent can choose to focus on being consistent with rules and discipline when the children are in his or her home.

Negative talk about the other parent

Just because divorced parents no longer love each other does not mean the children shouldn’t both parents. Never talk negatively about the other parent in front of the children. This will only add to their stress and anxiety. Even when one parent disagrees with the way their former spouse parents, expressing displeasure to the children is inappropriate.

Children are often caught in the middle when parents divorce. Co-parents need to be cooperative and consistent for the well-being of children. Gaining an understanding of child custody laws can also be beneficial. Parents in Arkansas who have questions or want to know more about child custody arrangements may want to consider speaking with a legal representative. A knowledgeable family law attorney can answer questions and provide much-needed guidance for parents in this situation.
