Why is divorce so common in Arkansas?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2024 | Divorce

As of the recent U.S. Census, Arkansas has a divorce rate that is bucking the trends. Instead of declining, divorce in this state is on the rise – and occurring about 67% more often than elsewhere in the nation.

Some of that may be related to the fact that folks in Arkansas seem to get married more often than couples in other states, too – but the real issue may have more to do with economics than anything.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, personal incomes have risen in every state in the union except for Arkansas. In addition, the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) – which is a key indicator of wealth and productivity – has seen the smallest increase in the nation. These are major signs that folks in this state are feeling economically pinched.

Money troubles often translate into marital troubles

Financial woes are often cited by divorcing couples as a major factor in their split. The exact nature of the money trouble can include things like:

  • Living beyond their means: This can create significant anxiety and cause fractures in the relationship, especially if neither spouse knows how to get the family finances under control
  • Lost connections: When one or both spouses are constantly working to try to stay financially afloat, there is very little time to work on a relationship
  • Financial infidelity: If one spouse hides money or debt from the other, the other spouse may feel deeply betrayed and resentful
  • Mismatched priorities: If one-half of a couple is carefree about their spending and the other is constantly stressed about the finances, that can lead to serious disagreements and constant fighting

Ultimately, a lot comes down to a lack of communication or different values that cut to the core of the marriage. Whatever the issues in your own relationship, however, legal guidance can help you understand your options and what steps to take next.
