Strategies to reduce the stress of divorce

Adobe Robertson18.jpegThere is really no way around it: Divorce is stressful. Even a seemingly "quick and easy" divorce comes with some level of stress.

In general, this is because divorce comes with a wide range of emotions, some positive and some negative, that can pull you in a hundred directions. It's a rollercoaster of ups and downs and everything in between which contributes to high stress levels. If you can't pull the brakes on the rollercoaster, it can quickly get away from you and the stress can have some serious consequences.

Before your stress levels get out of control, it is vital that you take action and remember how to relax. Here are a few strategies that will help you regain control of your emotions and limit your stress as you navigate the divorce process.

Pay attention to your needs

Pushing your emotions down and not dealing with them has the same result as shaking a can of soda. The pressure will build and eventually you are going to explode. You might find yourself at the mercy of your emotions and unable to easily regain control. You can avoid this by bringing your feelings out into the open and dealing with them directly. A therapist or support group can go a long way to improve your emotional wellness.

Stay active

Physical activity is also a great way to relieve stress, anger and anxiety. If you start feeling down or overwhelmed, go work it off at the gym, take a walk in the park or stop by a yoga class. Exercise is a proven method for improving emotional well-being.

Don't worry about things you can't control

During a divorce, there will be many things that happen that are completely out of your control. Instead of replaying them over in your head and thinking about what you could have done differently, let those moments go. Focus on what you can do and do not worry about what you can't. For instance, if you and your spouse cannot communicate without conflict, walk away instead of engaging in an argument.

Have some fun

Part of taking care of yourself is setting aside some time for fun. While you are going through divorce, give yourself a break. Schedule in regular recreational activities that are fun. This could be meeting your best friends for Sunday brunch, seeing a movie or even getting out of town for a little weekend excursion.

If you are planning to divorce, it is important to effectively manage your stress before, during and after the process. The above strategies can help you fight back against the negative feelings that can overwhelm you in the midst of divorce.
