Same-sex marriage: Arkansas update, developments nationally

Arkansas has been front and center recently in the great debate in the United States over gay marriage.

We have chronicled material developments that have occurred in the state recently in more than one blog post. For readers in search of more facts regarding what's been going on in Arkansas and nationally, we submit that our blog post dated May 28, 2014, supplies some informative material.

As a quick update to what has transpired since that post was written, we note this key development: The state's Supreme Court responded to judge Chris Piazza's ruling that Arkansas' ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional by putting a halt to gay marriages in the state in the wake of its issuance.

Thus, the issue will continue to be a hot-button matter with new chapters left to be written.

In the meantime, a high level of gay marriage-related activity continues to take place across the country. Federal judges in Pennsylvania and Oregon recently ruled that same-sex marriage bans in their states were unconstitutional. In a number of other states, plaintiffs are seeking to overturn gay marriage bans by court challenges (that was the case in Arkansas).

Information collected in Gallup polls reveals a discernible trend over time that underscores growing support nationally for same-sex unions. For example, Gallup statistics reveal that only about 27 percent of Americans queried on the topic in 1996 cited support for gay marriage. That level of support increased to about 42 percent by 2004 and now stands at around 55 percent.

As issues relating to same-sex marriage and domestic partnerships continue to swirl in Arkansas, strong representation can be provided to any person seeking legal assistance by a proven and client-empathetic attorney experienced in same-sex legal issues.
