Reminder to Arkansas motorists: DWI patrols out in force now

Although Arkansas law enforcement officials routinely state that their vigilance is unflagging throughout the year when it comes to spotting and arresting drunk drivers, they are noting that their focus is especially sharpened in December.

That means now, with cautious Arkansas motorists duly noting that forewarned is forearmed during this month of holidays and, for many residents, festivities.

Officials from the Arkansas State Police (ASP) and other safety/enforcement bodies want to ensure that the message they seek to centrally communicate over the holiday season is not lost amidst all the parties and good cheer that are going on across the state.

That message is this, simply and succinctly delivered: Do not drink and drive -- at all.

"If you're caught driving impaired ..., you will be arrested and taken to jail," says ASP head Colonel Stan Witt.

Witt's assertions are manifestly buttressed by the increased DWI-related response activities being carried out by state troopers throughout Arkansas presently, chiefly sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols that Witt says can occur "anytime, anywhere." Those operations are being conducted as part of the annual and nationwide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign that states participate in with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The program runs through New Year's Eve.

Among other recommendations for state residents who plan to consume alcohol during the holidays, the ASP Safety Office offers these tips: Plan ahead by having a designated sober driver on hand or, in the event such a motorist is unavailable, arrange for public transportation.
