Kate Winslet and fathers' rights group: a titanic row emerging?

A group in England focused upon equal parenting rights for dads recently got its Christmas present early, courtesy of actress Kate Winslet. Owing to what the organization Fathers4Justice subsequently did with Winslet's offering, the fathers' rights group and Winslet are now firmly embroiled in a spat that is playing out in the media and could eventually end up in court.

The subject matter driving the escalating dispute between Winslet and the men's rights group that uses the shorthand F4J is a familiar one in family law, namely, child custody. Because the Winslet/F4J tiff revolves around an issue that commonly plays out in divorces around the world, including in Arkansas, we set forth its details here for our readers.

The story can be quickly told. Winslet has three children, each with a different father. That can obviously result in some custody and visitation complexities, given her occupation and work schedule. Winslet recently voiced emphatically her opposition to sharing the kids with their fathers, saying “none of this 50/50 time with the mums and dads -- my children live with me; that is it.”

In response to those comments, F4J featured Winslet in a holiday advertisement, noting that she clearly “does not support ‘shared parenting.’” The group stated that it was using Winslet and her comments “to highlight the sensitive issue” of many children lacking access to their fathers during the holidays.

The matter seems unlikely to fade away after Christmas. Reportedly, Winslet’s legal team is considered filing a lawsuit against F4J, stating that the ad campaign is misleading and defames Winslet.
