Teenager in hot water with school after picking up drunk friend

It should be no shock to parents in Maumelle that some teenagers drink alcohol. While it is considered a crime, many parents and community members may think the consequences of an underage drinking conviction are relatively small. In some cases, the consequences are minor, but in others a teen can really suffer. And sometimes, it is not the criminal justice system, but the child's school district that will use the most severe of punishments.

Take, for example, the story of a high school senior who police stopped after she arrived at a party to pick up an intoxicated friend. The girl is not from Arkansas and it is unknown if any Arkansas school would react the way that hers did, but her story is an excellent example of just how serious underage drinking violations can be.

The teenager had received a call from a friend who was too drunk to drive. In order to help her friend out, she drove to a neighboring town to pick her up. Shortly after she got to the party, however, police arrived and started arresting teenagers for underage possession of alcohol. Though officers cleared the teenager, her school insists that she has violated its alcohol policy.

The school has stripped of her title as captain of the volleyball team and she will have to sit out from five games. For a senior who is likely in the middle of college applications, this could potentially set back her chances of getting into school.

She and her family are fighting the school district's punishment. Imagine how much worse it would have been for her, however, if she were found to be drinking.
