Alimony: no longer solely for women

Some 50 years ago, it would likely have been unheard of for a man in Heber Springs to receive alimony. Also known as spousal support, alimony was designed to help the spouse with less earning potential get back on his or her feet after a divorce. Yet, since men almost always had higher paying jobs than their wives, alimony was almost always awarded to women, never to men.

As the times have changed, however, so have the recipients of alimony. It is no longer just women who are getting alimony in Arkansas, but anyone who earns substantially less than his or her soon-to-be ex-spouse. This means that husbands who have quit their jobs to further their wives' careers or husbands whose incomes falls far short of their wives may be entitled to spousal support in the event of a divorce.

There are some reports that indicate almost 40 percent of women make more money than their husbands, which means that there are more and more men in Arkansas who may be able to recieve spousal support following divorce.

In addition, there are more men who are choosing to stay at home and raise the family or take care of the home. These "househusbands," just like housewives, are likely anxious that the other spouse is the only one who is bringing money home to the family. If there was a divorce, there is no guarantee that a spouse who put a career outside the home on hold would be able to successfully reenter the workplace.

Alimony can be difficult to recieve in Arkansas, however, so it is important that anyone who believes he or she should receive it, should work with an experienced family law attorney.
