As far back as high school, if ever asked what my life's ambition was, my response was always the same - I'm going to be a criminal defense attorney! I went to college and law school with this goal always in the forefront of my mind.
While I was in law school at Southern Methodist University, I worked in the Criminal Defense Clinic. When leaving the Clinic, I had to close out my cases by writing closing letters and preparing the cases to be transferred to a new student attorney who would be taking over any ongoing cases. The closing letters were given to the new attorneys to give them better insight into the clients' cases. My goal in writing the closing letters was to be a thorough as possible, so I described the facts of the case, any legal theories I was proposing, and any work that needed to be done. Since I didn't view the clients as just cases, I also found it essential to write a little bit about the client's background and life story.
I had worked extremely hard on one particular case and had made some real progress in helping my client. I wrote the closing letter and transferred the case to a new attorney whom I knew personally and trusted to give the case the attention it needed and deserved. A couple of months later, I got a phone call from the attorney who had taken over that case. She was calling to tell me that my client had read the closing letter I had written about his case, and he wanted to make a copy of the letter. She told me that the client couldn't believe all the nice things I had written about him and he wanted a copy to keep with him. The client even contacted me directly to thank me for my kind words. He said, "You were the first person in my life who believed in me; believed that I was capable of great things." That experience only validated and reaffirmed my desire to help those accused of criminal offenses.
In addition to my passion for criminal defense, I have a strong desire to work with families who may be facing a divorce or other problems causing disruption in the home. The interest I have in family law has its emotional roots in the difficulty my mother and I faced with my stepfather. My parents were divorced by the time I was three, and my mother remarried when I was six. I had to adjust to life with not only a step-father but also a step-brother and step-sister. My childhood was mostly pleasant, and I became very close to both my step-brother and step-sister. My step-brother was only six months older than me, and we grew up being the best of friends. The relationship with my step-father, though, was difficult, and grew more complicated in my teenage years. When I was twenty, the tension with him and our family finally lead to my mother seeking a divorce.
Through these experiences and the experience I have from the Robertson Law Firm, PLLC, I have become acutely aware of the legal challenges people face. I am the person who will fight for your rights, whether in your criminal matter or your family law matter, and I will be that constant in some of the toughest days of your life.
